The Department of Modern Literatures and Cultures (MLC) brings the study of seven different languages under one roof, emphasizing language, literary and cultural studies. The department uses language acquisition as an expression of human culture, aesthetic insight and a means of recording collective memory. Degree programs include:

Students who are interested in studying Spanish language and culture can do so through the Department of Latin American and Iberian Studies. Greek and Latin courses are available through the Department of Classical Studies.
In addition, the Robins School of Business offers an international business concentration that many students find appealing. Many language students pair their MLC major with a major in international studies or a major in English.
The Department of Modern Literatures and Cultures places a strong emphasis on interdepartmental and interdisciplinary or comparative studies. Courses are challenging and relate to subjects like history, literature, religion and political science. To encourage complete immersion, the department encourages students to take advantage of resources like the Multimedia Language Laboratory. Here, students have access to the latest in language learning technology and can work on fluency and comprehension.
A majority of students in the Department of Modern Literatures and Cultures participate in a study abroad experience while at Richmond, for a summer, a semester or an entire year. Pairing this with other experiential learning opportunities like research, students finish the program well prepared for careers or graduate study.
