Why Modern Literatures and Cultures?
Studying the world’s languages and cultures is more important today than ever before. Today’s social, political and economic environments require all people, regardless of nationality, to “think globally.” Acknowledging and embracing the linguistic realities of other cultures, as well as the multiple languages within our own culture, helps people come to terms with cultural diversity and creates a planet on which all cultures can thrive.
The University of Richmond is committed to producing students who are international learners. Newsweek magazine recently rated the University’s International Studies Program the “hottest” in the country. Nearly 70 percent of students study abroad at some point during their academic careers. The University requires that all students study a language through the intermediate level, a requirement that equals two years of language study for a student beginning a new language. These commitments to international education, in all its forms, make the University of Richmond a great place to study languages.
